The 27-year-old housewife recently decked a host of poker veterans during the Ladies Poker Party tournament at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens. This $120 No Limit Texas Hold'em Tournament was held over two days and featured a $35,000 prize pool. On Aug. 30, Zhang sat down at the table, feathered her cards and saw her hands were trembling. "I was nervous," she said. During the two-day event, Zhang beat 353 women to win the top prize of new playpoker $11,830 and a seat at playpoker links the televised World Poker Tour.
"There were no exciting hands," she said. "I tried to do my best. I was not intimidated." She has been playing online playpoker for five months and this game was her second tournament and first no-limit event, she said. During the televised World Poker Tour game of Texas Hold'em, Zhang placed second. The game was filmed Sept. 1 and is expected to be aired sometime next year. Not bad for the young woman who attended Catholic school while growing up in Canton, China, and who holds a master's degree in business. "I study the competition," she said.
In July, Zhang and her husband quit their full-time jobs and moved from Houston to Montebello so he could pursue a full- time career as a high-limit poker player. The couple are newlyweds who met at the University of Texas in Austin. "To this day, her parents do not know what we do," Tran said.
Poker is attracting more and more women, especially those 21 and older, said Sharon Silvas, 50, who has taught playpoker tournaments since 1995 at the Bicycle Casino. She says to be a winner you have to be part mathematician, part actor and part psychologist.
